I didn't write down notes from this week until too late, so the notes are very spotty; I'll make a point of getting things down on paper sooner next time. I'm looking forward to next Tuesday-- the world is afoot.

Participants: Nirav, Talia, Bergey, Heather, Brendan, Diana, Jimmy

"What have you been thinking or obsessing about recently?"

Talia was trying to figure out people-- their varied drives and interests. We discussed the geek and the poet clans.

I posed the question of whether there was virtue to be found popular culture, and soon were fuddled around amongst the definitions. We tore into distinctions between popular culture, culture which grows from the populace; mass culture, which is distributed by money; and private culture, which is specific to definite-boundary groups; with further gradations based on group purpose. And then wondered if there was any popular culture left that was not also mass culture.

In the middle of this, I was forced to give one-liner introductions of everyone when Diana arrived.

Diana brought to our attention the controversy over the recent Sony ads. We discussed the implications of Sony's motivations: who their market is, the uses of media attention, and whether there's a raceless variation that could have been the intent.

Bergey brought in the question of the meaning and significance of the size of the world (people calling it now "small" or "large"). "Small" was taken to be by virtue of global affects and fast communication; "large" because of the increased options available (the long tail). There were many good comments here, but I don't remember them...
