In my latest study, \u201cConfounding Adaptation in Perennial Climate Damages: A Unified Statistical Approach for Brazilian Coffee,\u201d I uncover the alarming, yet previously unestimated risks affecting the Brazilian coffee industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"961\" src=\"https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw-1024x961.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-363\" style=\"width:458px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw-1024x961.png 1024w, https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw-300x282.png 300w, https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw-768x721.png 768w, https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw-1536x1441.png 1536w, https:\/\/existencia.org\/pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/death_coeff1-vs-tmax-bw.png 1950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Misreported perennial yields and crop management decisions can significantly impact our understanding of these risks. The study reveals that extreme temperatures do reduce yields &#8211; but they also shrink the reported harvest area due to plant death and farmers\u2019 selective harvesting. In other words, the actual damage from extreme temperatures on coffee production is twice as severe as effects recorded on reported yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the study, I\u2019ve developed a framework that merges perennial supply and statistical yield literature to distinguish the effects of management decisions. The process unearthed a direct impact of temperatures on biophysical yields and a plant death effect.
